Seeding Process

One important and almost unique feature of Country Market is that most of the plants we sell are grown in-house - very rare in today's intensive garden centre culture.

We start with the basics. Seeds are individually sown in trays using a semi automatic seeding machine. The newly sown seeds are then transferred to the propagation area where they are nurtured and cared for by hand until ready for sale.

Click here for a more detailed illustration of the first phase of the growing process.

Therefore the process is fully under our control in our own nursery. In this way we ensure that the plants you buy are of the highest quality and likely to flourish in the local environment.

Propagation

The fully seeded trays are transferred to the propagation area for the next phase of the production process.

Here, the newly seeded plants are nurtured in a climatically controlled propagation area until they are ready for replanting. Each tray contains between 64 and 200 individual plants depending on variety.

It must be stressed that apart from the seeding process all further operations are carried out by hand and by our own skilled staff.

Plant Care

We are very strict about the level of care given to the seedlings and growing plants. Nothing is left to chance.

All the plants are regularly inspected by our skilled staff to check their progress. Any deficiencies are reported and dealt with immediately. All watering is done by hand.

Transplanting

Once the seedlings reach a certain size they need more space to continue their growth. Transplanting a large number of seedlings is a major task, an operation too overpowering for just manpower. Therefore, we have invested in a specialised machine specifically for task.

The seedlings are transplanted with help from this machine which can be adjusted to suit a variety of tray configurations. Some are replanted in trays ready for sale while others await transfer to individual pots.

Click here for a more detailed illustration of the transplanting process.

Additionally some transplanted seedlings are, after a short period of growth, offered for sale as economically priced starter plants.
